Fun Winter Ideas and Activities for Kids
While most adults may not care for Winter and the cold too much, most pre k children and young kids enjoy this time of year. Winter offers a wonderful opportunity for preschoolers to explore the outdoors and engage in creative indoor activities.
Here are some fun winter activities for preschoolers:
Build a Snowman: If you have snow, this is a classic winter activity for kids and preschoolers. Encourage creativity by providing various accessories like hats, scarves, and buttons.
Snow Angels: Show kids how to make snow angels in fresh, fluffy snow. It’s a simple yet delightful activity for children.
Snowball Fight: Gently toss soft snowballs at each other for a playful winter experience. Make sure to pack them loosely to avoid any accidents.
Sledding or Tubing: Find a safe hill for sledding or tubing for the children. Make sure it’s not too steep and that there are no obstacles that could pose any dangers.
Winter Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of winter-themed items for them to find, like pinecones, icicles, animal tracks, etc.
Indoor Obstacle Course: Set up a simple obstacle course using furniture, pillows, and blankets. Make it a fun challenge!
Hot Chocolate Party: Let the prek children or young ones help you make hot chocolate and set up a little “party” with marshmallows and whipped cream.
Winter-themed Crafts: Make snowflakes, paper plate snowmen, or handprint reindeer. Pinterest is a great resource for craft ideas.
Ice Painting: Freeze colored water in ice cube trays, then let the preschoolers use the ice cubes to “paint” on paper.
Read Winter-themed Books: Snuggle up with some hot cocoa and read winter-themed books to the kids. Ask them questions about the story to engage their comprehension.
Baking Cookies: Have a cookie-baking session. Let them help with simple tasks like pouring ingredients or using cookie cutters. The can also help decorate the cookies if you like using sprinkles and icing etc.
DIY Bird Feeders: Make bird feeders using pinecones, peanut butter, old (cooled) bacon grease and birdseed. Hang them outside and watch the birds enjoy them.
Ice Skating (if available): If there’s a safe ice skating rink nearby, take them for a fun day on the ice. Make sure to have them wear proper Winter gear to stay warm.
Snowy Treasure Hunt: Hide small toys or treats in the snow and have them dig for treasures.
Snowy Science Experiments: Conduct simple winter-themed science experiments, like observing how snow melts indoors versus outdoors.
Remember to always ensure safety during outdoor activities, especially in cold weather. Dress the preschool children and young kids in warm layers, provide hats and gloves, and monitor their time spent outdoors.
Enjoy the winter season!
